About

Held since 1990, this festival takes over the old Tokaido post town of Shinagawa-shuku, which in the Edo period was the first of the 53 stations on the highway between Edo and Kyoto. Its aim is to hand Shinagawa's traditions and culture down to the next generation and to support the local area. The route covers about 2 km of the old Tokaido, from Yatsuyama in Kita-Shinagawa to Aomono-yokocho in Minami-Shinagawa. Day one features a dazzling oiran courtesan procession, and on day two a festival procession and a traffic-safety parade walk the old road. Kita-Shinagawa and Shimbamba stations on the Keikyu Line are right nearby, so it is easy to combine with a neighborhood stroll.
