About
In the first half of Toshima City's community festival, the Mikoshi Festival, 16 large mikoshi and thousands of bearers parade around the west exit of Ikebukuro Station, their lively chants ringing through the streets. Ikebukuro West Gate Park has singing shows and dance, plus food stalls from local restaurants. It takes place in September, matching the grand festival of Ikebukuro Mitake Shrine, the area's guardian shrine. The festival was launched in 1968 by four merchant associations at the west exit; when redevelopment of the area was finished, local volunteers wanted a lively neighborhood that was safe to walk in. The second half, the dance festival, is Tokyo Yosakoi in October.
