About

Mt. Daisen opens its summer climbing season on the first weekend of June with a festival asking for safe days on the mountain. The highlight comes on Saturday evening: once a rite at Ogamiyama Shrine's Okunomiya is over, a line of people holding torches heads along the approach toward a special festival ground at Hakurouza. Around 2,000 flames move together in what is called a "river of fire that flows for just one night," a sight that pulls in visitors from all over Japan and overseas. Local food stalls and stage shows keep the festival ground busy. On Sunday a summit ceremony prays for climbers' safety and declares the summer season properly underway. If you want to carry a torch yourself, buy a torch voucher in advance.
