About

On the first Saturday of June each year, Amedaki Falls in Tottori City's Kokufu district is ceremonially opened for the season. The main attraction is the Inaba Kasa Odori, an umbrella dance handed down in eastern Tottori. Its roots lie in a dance with flower-trimmed hats performed to pray for rain during a drought in the late Edo period, and the dance took its present shape in the Meiji era. Performers whirl big umbrellas on long handles in time with the song, their crisp moves recalling a sword dance. Because this is the parent form of the umbrella dance seen at the Tottori Shan Shan Festival in August, the falls offer a rare look at where that dance came from.
