About
Every autumn, Sanbutsuji Temple on Mt. Mitoku in Misasa Town holds a festival of Shugendo, the ascetic practice of Japan's mountain monks. The core is the saito goma fire rite: as conch horns sound, yamabushi throw wooden sticks bearing people's wishes into a roaring blaze. Next comes the fire-walk, regarded as a secret Shugendo practice, in which people cross the burning fire barefoot, praying for health, recovery from illness, fulfilled wishes and protection from bad luck. Members of the public can walk too by paying a fee. Add a yamabushi procession, offerings of children's karate and music, bamboo sake and ascetics' rice porridge handed out to visitors, and a market, and the mountain temple stays busy all day. Free shuttle buses run from the Misasa Onsen hot spring town.
