About
Every autumn the port town of Sakaiminato throws a seafood festival, reaching its fortieth edition in 2026. It takes place in and around the prefecture-run wholesale fish market. Rows of stalls sell fresh fish, processed seafood and food to eat on the spot, including items linked to the local seafood-product awards voted on by the public. Free crab and the sardine-ball soup on sale are both available only while supplies last. The stage hosts a tuna-carving show, a chance to try buying at a mock auction, and the port's Tairyo taiko drummers, and there is a corner for learning about fisheries plus a big prize draw. It starts early in the morning and is over by early afternoon, so plan to come early.
