About
Each October, Miyazaki Fishing Port in Asahi Town, right by the Hisui (Jade) Coast, throws a food festival devoted to the local cod soup. The dish goes back to the late 1950s and early 1960s, when cod was the backbone of village life: as fishermen returned around midday, big pots were set over driftwood fires on the beach, freshly cleaned fish went straight into the soup, and families and crewmates ate it sitting in a ring. Beach huts later served it to summer swimmers, and restaurants and inns along National Route 8 took it up in such numbers that the road became known as the "Tarajiru Kaido," or Cod Soup Highway. The soup is made with walleye pollock, at its best from summer into autumn, and its deep, rich flavor keeps a queue forming all day. Local products, stage shows and a prize draw round out the festival.
