About

On October 1 each year, Hojozu Hachimangu Shrine in Imizu's Shinminato area holds this float festival as part of its autumn grand festival, a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. With 13 floats, more than any other festival in Toyama, it fills the streets to shouts of "Iyasa, iyasa": flowers adorn the floats by day, and lanterns light them up at night. The most thrilling moments come when the heavy floats whip around tight corners, and after dark the lantern light shimmers on the Uchikawa canal. Nobody knows exactly when the festival started, but Kojinmachi, which pulls the lead float, traces its float to 1650. In December 2025, the float and tsukiyama rites of Hojozu Hachimangu joined UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage listing "Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals."
