About
On the first Saturday of February, the hot spring town of Unazuki Onsen stages a winter festival of snow and fire with a long history; 2026 was its eightieth year. In the evening a sagicho bonfire rite is held in Unazuki Park, then participants carry flaming torches through the streets on the Torch Walk before setting the bonfire alight together. The walk is open to anyone, first come, first served. The night wraps up with fireworks choreographed to music over the snow, fired from high ground so they are visible from anywhere in town. Admission is free. The park has no pavement, the ground is dark, and sparks and soot drift from the fire, so come in boots and clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
