About
At the Michi-no-Eki Fukumitsu roadside station in Nanto, a winter festival sends huge paper balloons soaring into the sky. With Mt. Kuwayama, a view cherished by the woodblock artist Shiko Munakata, as a backdrop, the balloons climbing into a blue sky are a wonderful sight, and as evening approaches the burner flames light them up red from inside for a dreamlike scene. There is kite flying as well. Wind or heavy rain or snow can ground the balloons, so they are sent up one after another as the weather permits. Traffic is restricted around the site on the day, there is no event parking, and visitors are asked to keep out of off-limits areas.
