About

Shingu's summer Kumano Jofuku Mantosai remembers Xu Fu (Jofuku), who legend says reached these shores about 2,200 years ago. Most people come for the Shingu Fireworks Festival on the night of August 13, staged over the Kumano River. Some 6,000 shells plus around 20 set pieces go up, and starmines launched on the water and a falling Niagara curtain light the river. About 50,000 spectators turn up each year, making it one of the biggest fireworks events in the area. A memorial ceremony is held the day before, August 12, at Jofuku Park. Light rain does not stop the fireworks; stormy weather moves them to a backup date. Viewing is free, and free parking is set up on the riverbank and elsewhere.
