About
On the night of February 6, Kamikura Shrine in Shingu becomes the scene of a fire festival designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. About 2,000 noboriko, worshippers in white bound with coarse straw rope, clutch blazing torches and charge down 538 steep stone steps in a single rush. Regular visits end at noon that day; after that the mountain is closed, and at night only the noboriko, shrine staff and people with the shrine's permission may go up. A celebratory rite follows on the morning of February 7. Traffic is restricted around the shrine in the evening, and the visitor car park closes at 15:00, so drivers are pointed to a temporary riverside lot near Kumano Hayatama Taisha.
