About
On February 8, Awashima Shrine in Kada, Wakayama City, holds a memorial service for sewing needles. Needles brought in over the past year are purified in the main hall, then placed in a needle mound, sprinkled with salt and given back to the earth. It is a gesture of gratitude to the needles for their daily work, and a prayer for better sewing ahead. The rite grows out of the belief that the shrine's deity, Sukunahikona, first taught people to sew. The ceremony starts at 11:00.
