About
Held at Fureai Square on Taiji fishing port, this festival thanks the whale for its gifts and marks more than 400 years of whaling in Taiji. Expect local performing arts and dances, stalls of products from neighboring towns and villages and a food bazaar, all with the bustle of a harbor town. Stay toward the end for the Taiji Kujira Odori, a whale dance designated an intangible folk cultural property of Wakayama Prefecture and part of the Japan Heritage story "Living with Whales." Through performance and food, it offers an easy way into the culture of a town long bound to the whale. Entry is free, and parking is available.
