About
Every year at its festival, Nagano Hachiman Shrine in Tanabe presents the Sumiyoshi Odori as an offering to the deity. Recognized as an intangible folk cultural property of Wakayama Prefecture, this old-style dance is said to express joy at a good harvest. Fifteen young men perform it, the number always kept odd. With a fan in the right hand and a bamboo sprig in the left, they sing while dancing to a drum. The dance starts at 10:00. Take the Nagano Line bus from JR Kii-Tanabe Station on the Kinokuni Line for about 25 minutes to the Mine stop, then walk about 5 minutes.
