About

Obanazawa calls itself the birthplace of the hanagasa (flower hat) dance, and every year on August 27 and 28 it hosts the "original" version of the festival, known as the finale of Yamagata's summer festival season. It is said to have once been counted among the three great festivals of Tohoku in the Edo period. On the first day, a traditional procession with portable shrines and festival-music floats winds through town; on the second, a grand hanagasa dance parade takes over the streets. The local style is bold and athletic, with big hats spun dynamically overhead. Lake Tokura in Obanazawa is known as the birthplace of the hanagasa dance.
