About
Held on the banks of the Akagawa River in Tsuruoka, this is the city's signature summer event and one of the "Top 50 Fireworks in Japan." Around 12,000 shells light up the sky as leading pyrotechnicians from across the country compete, alongside fireworks shows choreographed to music, and spectators pick their most moving display. The festival's 33rd edition, in 2026, had the theme "HIBIKI: resonating emotion, a shining future." Because it falls during the Obon homecoming season, it makes a good summer outing with family and friends. There is no free seating: tickets must be booked in advance, there is no parking near the venue, and the official car parks are only for ticket holders. The event is not postponed for bad weather.
