About
Sagae's big autumn festival is timed to the annual grand festival of Sagae Hachimangu Shrine. One highlight is the shrine's yabusame, a sacred rite of horseback archery handed down from the samurai of the Kamakura period and designated an intangible folk cultural property of Yamagata Prefecture: riders loose arrows while galloping at full speed. The festival builds to the Mikoshi Festival, one of the largest portable-shrine gatherings in the Tohoku region, where shrines carried in different styles meet in one place, from Tokyo-style mikoshi hoisted to cries of "soiya, soiya" to Shonan-style ones carried to "dokkoi, dokkoi," along with the shrine's own mikoshi. Children's mikoshi and music floats join in, and a food-stall and stage area sets up in front of Sagae Station.
