About

This is the festival of Kurokawa Noh, the Noh tradition handed down at Kasuga Shrine in Kurokawa, Tsuruoka. Originally called the New Year rite and nicknamed the Tofu Festival, it begins before dawn on February 1, when the sacred Ogi-sama is carried to the tōya host houses of the two Noh guilds. From evening, beginning with the Daichi-fumi stamping dance, Okina, Sanbaso, Noh plays and Kyogen continue into the night. On February 2 the deity returns to the shrine, where both guilds perform until late afternoon. The festival once lasted four days but was shortened to two in the Edo period to save costs. As a community religious rite rather than a tourist event, viewing in the homes on February 1 requires an advance application and lottery; shrine viewing on February 2 is arranged at the reception on the day.
