About
Each year this grand festival is held at Kinoene Daikokuten Honzan, a temple on a hill overlooking the Onogawa hot-spring village. It belongs to the Daigo branch of Shingon Buddhism and keeps alive a mountain-ascetic (shugendo) tradition that blends the lineages of the Yudonosan yamabushi and the Uesugi clan's prayer temple. Its main image of Daikokuten, the god of fortune, was brought from Dainichiji, one of the temples of Mount Yudono, in 1865, and is named for the kinoene ("wood rat") day of the old calendar, Daikokuten's festival day. The festival sweeps away the past year's misfortune and prays for good luck in the new year: yamabushi gather to drive off ill fortune with rites using a sacred axe, bow and sword, then offer blessings for good fortune. Rites take place twice, at 10:00 and 12:00, and anyone may join; participants receive a talisman, lucky rice cakes and sacred sake.
