About

Every May, Fugenji temple in Murozumi, Hikari, holds a grand early-summer festival. The temple is said to have begun as a single hall built by the monk Shoku in the Heian period, and people from many places have long come to pray here to the bodhisattva of the sea. The festival is tied to the anniversary of Shoku's death and is said to have continued since the mid-Edo period. More than 200 stalls set up along the roads around the temple, selling garden plants, farm tools, pottery and odds and ends, and worshippers stream through from midday until night. It ranks among Hikari's biggest festivals and is run by the temple itself. Crowds are heavy, so public transportation is the best way to get there.
