About

The main event of Fuefuki's autumn festival brings back the Battles of Kawanakajima, fought in the Warring States period between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. The fighters are members of the public who suit up in armor and warlord costumes and divide into the Takeda and Uesugi sides. Each army dresses and rehearses at its own check-in point, then marches down Ichibu-dori in Isawa to take position on the battlefield set up on the riverbank in front of Fuefuki City Hall. From the embankment, spectators cheer, drums pound and victory cries ring out. In recent years actors have taken the roles of Shingen and Kenshin. It goes ahead rain or shine.
