About
Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine's opening ceremony signals the start of the summer climbing season on Mount Fuji. Every July 1, the shrine, which sits at the starting point of the Yoshida Trail, announces the mountain's opening to the deity Sengen Okami and prays for the safety of climbers and the people who work along the trail. Daidai kagura sacred dances are offered from 9:30 to 10:00, and the opening rite itself begins at 10:00. Take a bus from Fujisan Station on the Fujikyu line and get off at Sengen Jinja-mae; the shrine is right in front of the stop.
