About
Omuro Sengen Shrine in Shimoyoshida, Fujiyoshida, holds its annual festival every year on September 18 and 19. The ritual is said to have continued for more than 800 years, since the end of the Heian period, with archers on fast horses hitting target after target. What sets it apart from other yabusame is the hoof divination: once the horses have run, a diviner studies their hoofprints to read what misfortunes may come. Arrows that miss and land on the road can be taken home as good-luck charms. The horses race along the road in front of the shrine, so you can feel their power up close. Usually, the opening day brings a parade of the offering horses through town and the procession of the Fujisan mikoshi, and the closing day the grand festival rites and the hoof divination.
