About

Counted among the three great festivals of the Gunnai region, this is Tsuru's largest festival. It takes place around Yamura Daiichi Elementary School, on the site of the former Yamura Castle. The highlights are 4 gorgeous yatai floats hauled through the streets and a daimyo procession handed down since the Edo period. The float curtains include designs such as the Tiger and the Kashima Dance, said to have been sketched by Katsushika Hokusai, glittering with gold-thread embroidery. The 2026 festival, the forty-second, had a Yoi-matsuri evening on the opening day with a market, float pulling and fireworks, and a Hon-matsuri main day with the daimyo procession, performing arts on stage and closing fireworks (part of the main day was cancelled because of rain). For inquiries, contact the Furusato Jidai Matsuri Executive Committee.
