About
Known for calling spring into the Kofu Basin, this market in Minami-Alps City is said to date back 400 years to the Warring States period. It prides itself on variety, with a local saying that "the only things you can't buy at Tokaichi are cats' eggs and horses' horns." Stalls of every kind line the grounds, from the famous wooden pestles and mortars to lucky Koshu daruma, garden plants, antiques, crafts and street food, and stage shows add to the energy. It runs for 2 days over a Saturday and Sunday in early February, around Wakakusa Kawara Hall and the JA Minami-Alps Wakakusa sorting facility. It may be cancelled in bad weather such as heavy snow, and roads nearby are restricted during the fair.
