About
Over a weekend in Miya, a seaside district of Gamagori, Yatsurugi Shrine and Wakamiya Shrine hold their joint festival: a preliminary day on Saturday, then the main procession on Sunday. According to local lore, it started in 1696 after the village headman dreamed of the shrine's deity going to Wakamiya, and organized a procession with a portable shrine. Each of the six neighborhoods dances as an offering, and the men of the parish pull four richly decorated floats, known here as yama, back and forth between the two shrines. The moment to see is Sunday's sea procession: when a signal shot goes off, men in white cotton wraps haul the floats into the water one by one and drive them through the bay amid shouting and spray. It is listed as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Gamagori City.
