About

On the 13th day of the first lunar month, Owari Okunitama Shrine (Konomiya) in Inazawa holds its Naoi Shinji rite, better known as the Konomiya Naked Festival. A single man, the shin-otoko or "god man," is picked by sacred lot, and because touching him is thought to strip away bad luck, a mass of men in white loincloths pushes and grapples to reach him, a scene of raw energy. In the afternoon, groups of men run into the worship hall bearing bamboo branches hung with cloth strips carrying the wishes of people who cannot strip down themselves. A huge rice cake made from fifty bales of rice sits in the hall and is cut and handed out the next day. The rite is said to go back to the Nara period, when the provincial governor prayed here against plague after an imperial order to do so.
