About
On February 10 and 11, Akumi Kanbe Shinmeisha Shrine in Toyohashi acts out the myths of Japan's beginnings in the form of dengaku, a ritual dance in fashion from the Heian to Kamakura periods. Because the old style survives here intact, it is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The 10th is the eve, with rites such as the opening of the Heavenly Rock Cave; the 11th is the main day. The big moment on the 11th is the contest between a troublemaking red demon and a tengu, who puts the demon in its place. To make up for its mischief, the beaten demon dashes out of the shrine and around town, flinging white powder and tankiri candy. Getting powdered and eating the candy are said to ward off misfortune and summer illness.
