About

On the second Saturday of February, Damine Kannon (Kosho-ji Temple) in Shitara performs Tamine Dengaku, a cycle of ritual music and dance asking for a good harvest. It comes in three parts. The daytime dengaku holds rites and dances for the gods; the night dengaku, inside the Kannon hall, acts out the steps of rice farming, from making hoes and clearing weirs to choosing seed; and the morning dengaku brings masked dances by fires lit at the four corners of the grounds. For days before, the performers keep a strict regimen of purification, pouring cold water over themselves daily. Said to have been passed down since 1559, it is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and one of Mikawa's three dengaku, together with Horaiji and Kurosawa.
