About

On June 5 each year, Atsuta Jingu holds its annual grand festival, the most important rite of its calendar, known locally as the Atsuta Festival or Shobu-sai. An envoy sent by the Emperor attends: after the chief priest's prayer, the envoy presents offerings and reads a prayer for the imperial family and the peace of the nation. Afterward the grounds come alive with offerings of sumo, kendo, judo and archery, as well as performing arts, haiku and calligraphy, and nearby neighborhoods bring children's lion dances and makiwara portable shrines. In the evening, makiwara lantern towers glow at the gates and fireworks over Jingu Park signal the arrival of summer. It's a local custom to put on your first yukata of the year for this day, and you'll see people browsing the stalls with fans in hand.
