About

Held when the roses are at their best, this festival takes place in the Ishida Rose Garden in Odate. The garden was once the private garden of the late Hirohide Ishida, Odate's first honorary citizen; his family donated the roses and the city has cared for them since 1995. Covering about 2,300 square metres and planted as a sample garden with, as a rule, one bush of each variety, it holds around 500 kinds of roses, so you can compare a remarkable range in a short visit. Alongside the early-summer Season 1 there is an autumn Season 2, and in 2026 the garden also opened in the evening on Fridays and Saturdays in June. During the festival a local confectioner sells rose-shaped 'barano mochi' sweets. Admission is free, and the garden is open for strolling outside the festival as well.
