About
Hachinohe's biggest festival, with a history of around 300 years, is the joint annual rite of three local shrines: Ogami Shrine, Chojasan Shinra Shrine and Shinmeigu. It runs for five days, from July 31 to August 4, and draws more than a million visitors. Alongside stately shrine processions with portable shrines and tiger dances, 27 enormous floats parade through the city center. The floats take their themes from folk tales, kabuki and the like, and are made every year by groups competing to outdo one another. On the eve and closing nights the floats stand on display along the downtown streets, so you can stroll among them while the festival music plays. The float procession was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 2004 and inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016 as part of the Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals.
