About

The town of Oma holds this celebration every year on Marine Day in July. In the fishing festival, boats decked out in brightly colored good-catch flags head out to sea together to pray for safety and a plentiful catch, with sacred kagura dances offered offshore. It is a stirring sight as the decorated boats cut through the rough waves. Alongside it, the Tenpi-sama Procession winds through town. Tenpi-sama is a goddess who protects those at sea; in the Tohoku region she is enshrined only at Oma's Inari Shrine. The procession began in 1996, marking 300 years since she was enshrined here, and is cancelled in the rain.
