About
Nuruyu Onsen in Kuroishi is a hot spring village with more than 450 years of history, and this traditional festival is held there every year around the height of summer. It centers on the Tsuru-no-yu public bathhouse. After an eve festival the night before, children pull a portable shrine carrying a sacred ox figure to the hot spring on the main day. The highlight is the bathing ceremony: it is said that if you stroke the ox and then touch the part of your body that ails you, it will heal, so bathers crowd forward to receive its blessing.
