About

Every spring, the grounds of Hirosaki Castle burst into bloom with some 2,600 cherry trees of 52 varieties – mostly Somei Yoshino, along with weeping and double-flowered cherries. Even Somei Yoshino trees more than a century old produce four or five blossoms from a single bud, so the branches grow so thick with flowers that they almost hide the sky, the result of exceptionally careful tree care. During the festival, special illumination lights up the blossoms from sunset until 10 p.m. You can also view the trees from the moat aboard a traditional wooden boat poled by a boatman, rent a rowboat, or browse the food stalls and local-products hall.
