About

Since 1977, Hirosaki Park has been transformed each February into a winter wonderland. Local residents hand-make some 150 snow lanterns and snow sculptures of all sizes and set them throughout the castle grounds – a homegrown way to brighten the long northern winter. Around the lotus pond, which looks out toward Mt. Iwaki, about 300 mini snow huts glow with candlelight. In the main area, a giant snow sculpture modeled on a historic building becomes a screen for projection mapping after dark, and a huge snow slide keeps kids (and adults) busy. With the snow-dusted keep and old pines lit up at night, it is a quiet, magical way to see the castle in winter.
