About
Each summer, at the foot of Nojimazaki Lighthouse on the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula, Chiba Prefecture's biggest night festival takes place; it began in 1964. The great night swim is the moment everyone waits for: ama women divers in white carry blazing torches into the dark sea and, holding onto wooden tubs, swim in a ring around the harbor to pray for safe seas and good catches. It is said to recall how the divers once searched through the night for the crew of a ship wrecked off Nojimazaki. The torchlight is woven together with music, projected images, fireworks and the lighthouse, and there is also a mikoshi from Itsukushima Shrine, a dragon god dance and a big Shirahama Ondo bon dance.
