About
This summer festival, about 300 years old, joins the Naritasan Gion-e of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple with the celebrations of the neighborhoods outside its gate. The Gion-e is a prayer for good harvests and answered wishes, offered to the Dainichi Buddha enshrined in the inner sanctuary as the original form of the temple's principal image, Fudo Myoo. For 3 days, 10 floats and yatai wagons with superb carvings and decorations, along with 1 mikoshi, travel the Omotesando approach and the streets around it. The first day opens in front of the Great Main Hall with a safety prayer and the breaking open of a sake cask, then a mass dance with every float gathered together. The biggest moment comes on the final day, when the floats are hauled at full speed up the steep Nakamachi slope. At night the floats are lit up and gather on the Omotesando, where music and shouts fill the air. About 450,000 people visit each year.
