About
On November 3, the districts of Ainan Town each hold their own autumn festival on the same day. The figure to look for is the ushioni, a huge bull-like effigy with a demon mask; every district builds its own with a different face, so it pays to compare them. Mikoshi shrines, decorated floats, yotsu-daiko drum floats, five-deer dancers and karajishi lions all come out too. Some districts have a signature act: a rough lion dance in Iegushi, the five-deer dance in Funakoshi, the Heto dance in Kura, a rice-bale procession in Midori, a mikoshi carried by women in Misho and karajishi in Fushizaki. Hopping between the districts of Minamiuwa is the best way to see how each celebration differs.
