About

On November 3, a procession winds through Tachima in Yoshida, Uwajima, as part of the autumn festival of Hachiman Shrine. It is a nationally designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and the parade, which took shape in the late Edo period, still follows streets laid out much as they were in the old domain town. In line come a ceremonial boat, two-story nerikuruma floats topped with dolls, a deer dance by 7 dancers, ushioni bull-demons, mikoshi and masked hota figures, letting you see southern Ehime's festival traditions side by side. The raised embroidery on the float curtains hints at how prosperous Yoshida's merchants once were. In the early-morning sumo rite, the bouts are between gods, so no winner is named and the result is held over until next year. Festival rites and the Ise dance are on November 2.
