About

For 2 days, Nomura in Seiyo, a town that calls itself a sumo town, hosts a sumo tournament like no other. Top-division wrestlers and promising lower-ranked ones come from the Japan Sumo Association, along with leading amateurs, and professionals and amateurs meet in the same ring, something no other tournament in Japan offers. Look out for the chigo dohyo-iri, where top-division wrestlers hold small children and stamp the ring to wish them good health, and for the chanko stew festival. It all began after a great fire in 1852 (Kaei 5), when locals offered 33 votive bouts to ward off fire, and 2026 marks its 175th year. The venue is Otoi Kaikan. Free shuttle buses run from the Mikame and Uwa areas, and admission is free for junior high students and younger.
