About
Onmaku is Imabari's own citizens' festival, usually held over a weekend in early August around Imabari Port, Hirokoji and the shopping streets. In local dialect the word means something like "all out" or "loads," and the name is an invitation for visitors to throw themselves in too. There are three main things to see: the Onmaku Odori, where residents turn out to dance together; local performing arts such as tsugi-jishi stacked lion dancers and Shimanami Kaido taiko; and fireworks on the last night. The festival dates from the mid-1990s, when the Port Festival and the Bari Festival were combined into one event that residents plan, fund and run themselves. Partly to cope with the summer heat, it is due to move to autumn and become a single-day event from its 30th edition, expected to take effect from 2027.
