About
Matsuyama's biggest summer festival runs from Friday to Sunday in early August. Dancers form teams called ren and move down the streets to upbeat music, each team with choreography of its own. The dances are judged in divisions such as company teams and community groups, so every ren gives it everything. Keep an eye out for Baseball-Dance, a fresh spin on the yakyuken dance tradition. Baseball runs deep in Matsuyama, which is known as the home of yakyuken, a song-and-dance game that dates from the Taisho era. Performances take place in Okaido, Chifunemachi and the Horinouchi area of Shiroyama Park, and watching is free.
