About

From October 5 to 7, neighborhoods all over Matsuyama hold autumn festivals to give thanks for the harvest. People come for the hachiawase, where bearers shouting "motekoi, motekoi" drive portable shrines head-on into each other, which is why they are also called kenka mikoshi, fighting shrines. In Dogo, eight great mikoshi from eight neighborhoods set out from Isaniwa Shrine and Yu Shrine, and in the early morning of the final day each clashes twice in front of Dogo Onsen Station, 8 collisions in total, with the young guardians around each mikoshi shoving with their whole bodies. Also worth seeing is the climb up and down the 135 steep stone steps of Isaniwa Shrine as the shrines leave and return. The clash at Itsukushima Shrine is well known too, and others happen around the city.
