About

Autumn in Niihama means taikodai, drum floats about 5.5 m tall and weighing around three tons, working their way through the whole city in one of Ehime's signature festivals. The peak moments are the kakikurabe in each district: the wheels are removed, about 150 bearers shoulder the float, and with a unison cry of "Sorya, sorya" they push it high overhead in the sashiage, drawing roars from the crowd. The curtains on each float, embroidered in gold and silver thread, are treasures passed down within each neighborhood. When the Jobu district floats gather at Yamane Ground, visitors come from across Japan and the drums and flutes never let up. Expect heavy traffic during the festival and road closures near the kakikurabe sites.
