About
Fukui City's spring festival revolves around the cherry-lined banks of the Asuwa River, one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. Its dates follow the bloom forecast and are sometimes extended. The trees are lit after dark, so you can walk beneath them by day and again in the evening. They grew from thousands of saplings planted on the embankments by the chamber of commerce and city tourism association after the Fukui Reconstruction Exposition. Lantern-lighting under the name Fukui Sakura Matsuri began in 1955; a historical procession celebrating the completion of the Tsukumo Bridge, tied to Shibata Katsuie, was later added and the event became the Fukui Spring Festival, before reverting to its original name in 2018. It is walkable from JR Fukui Station, and as roads and car parks get jammed, public transport is the way to go.
