About
During cherry blossom season, Maruoka Castle and the surrounding Kasumigajo Park in Sakai hold a spring festival. The castle is one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots; wrapped in full bloom, its keep seems to hover in a mist, which is why it is also called Kasumigajo, the Castle of Mist. Some 300 paper lanterns are lit, and 160 original lamps light the paths around the castle. After sunset the keep is illuminated and used as a screen for projection mapping. On one weekend, a castle-town market, children's fair stalls and a sweets giveaway are planned in the castle car park, with visits from Sakai's mascot characters. It is worth coming twice: once by day for the blossoms and keep, and again after dark for the lights. The organizer is the Maruoka Castle Cherry Blossom Festival promotion society.
