About
When the weeping cherries reach their peak, the Takeda district of Maruoka in Sakai holds a spring festival in their honor. The district has more than 700 weeping cherry trees, and at the festival grounds, Takekurabe Hiroba, over 150 of them burst into bloom at once, their slender branches spilling down like waterfalls and swaying in the breeze. The trees at Takekurabe Hiroba are lit up in the evenings, starting with a lighting ceremony on the first evening, and a photo contest welcomes shots taken around Takeda. The festival is organized by the local community council and a cultural association and run by residents themselves. Its dates can change with the blossoms, so check before you go.
