About
Hakozakigu Shrine in Fukuoka's Higashi Ward celebrates autumn for seven days and nights, from September 12 to 18. One of Hakata's three great festivals with Dontaku in spring and Yamakasa in summer, it is about valuing every living thing, avoiding needless killing and giving thanks for the harvest, and with over a thousand years behind it, it is the shrine's most important rite. Hundreds of stalls pack the approach while ceremonies and festive performances carry on all week. Try shajitsu-mochi, the shrine's grilled rice cakes, and look for the lucky clay ohajiki made by Hakata doll artisans. In odd-numbered years there is also a mikoshi procession, a Fukuoka City intangible folk cultural property. Hakozakimiyamae Station on the subway is about 3 minutes' walk away.
